This talk developed from a presentation at the Manchester University MA symposium in 2022 and is based on Hilary’s personal fascination for one of the less-appreciated animals of Ancient Egypt. Not being associated with any major deity nor being prominent among the symbols of rebirth, the humble hedgehog appears in tomb art as just one creature among the varied wildlife of the Egyptian landscape. In this talk Hilary hopes that her hedgehog-spotting approach to museum visiting will raise the urchin’s profile, bringing it out of the obscurity of the desert fringes and into people’s hearts.

Biography

Hilary Wilson is a regular contributor to Ancient Egypt Magazine, having written the Per Mesut pages ‘for younger readers’ for more than sixteen years, and she has been Chair of the Southampton Ancient Egypt Society since its inauguration twenty-five years ago. Hilary gained her MA in Egyptology from the University of Manchester in 2022.
